The Jirkov Gallery has been opened for all the fine-art fans since 1991. It is run by Mr. Josef Hána on the basis of a Ministry of Culture licence. The idea of establishing such an institution in Jirkov was initialy introduced by late Mr. Zdeněk Glückselig, the founder of the culture promoting organisation "Dolní sněmovna", inspirer of many Jirkov's cultural activities. In his opinion, such institution was needed in the town with population over 21,000.
The original exhibition premises were situated on the first floor of the Česká spořitelna bank. In 1997, the gallery gained new premises in the house of the former Municipal Library branch, situated in the vicinity of the church. The house, originating from the 19th century is owned by the town. The gallery is situated on the first floor, the town Information Centre on the ground floor. The gallery pays the town a symbolic rent of 1 CZK/year. The town budget also subsidises the energies to a certain extent. The rooms had to be adjusted before the Gallery could start its operation. The architectural design was provided by Mr. Ing. Martin Rösler and financed by the Elektrárna Prunéřov power plant – the former place of work of the gallery curator, Mr. Josef Hána. There is also an architectural design for the utilization of the house patio – a place which resounds with music in the summer months.
The exhibits are presented on an area of 100 sq meters. Paintings representing the surrounding countryside have been on display since the year 2000. The author is Mr. Jan Plíva, a painter from the village of Červený Hrádek belonging to the Jirkov municipality. Part of the exhibited paintings were lent by the Chomutov Museum, another part by the town of Jirkov. Several interconnected rooms serve as premises for organising various exhibitions. There is about 8 exhibitions organised every year. Artists associated with our region are presented here in particular. Each exhibition opening is a cultural event of its own; the fine art is accompanied by musical performance. There are also exhibits presenting the history of Jirkov in the gateway of the house. Further works are displayed on the walls of the staircase. The staircase itself is painted in bright blue colour and it forms a pleasant entry to the gallery premises.
