History

Jirkov arised approximately in 13th century. The claim, that Jirkov was arised by king Přemysl Otakar II. in 1269 isn't documented. The Gothic church was construct in 1300. The chronicles tells about this localite as the Borek or Jurkov in the years 1321 and 1337. Historic notes tells about the Jirkov in the year 1352. The castle Červený Hrádek (Red castle) arised in 15th centruy. Jirkov was spare the siege by Hussites in 1421. The castle Červený Hrádek was conquest and desolated.

The most important document about recognition and certification town laws by Ladislav Pohrobek was issued 25 of February 1455. Later, Vladislav II. (1507), Ferdinand I. (1528), Maxmilián (1570) and Rudolph II. these laws certified and Rudolph II. certified the heraldy and seal too.

Brewery operated from the year 1840. Jirkov very good prospered in 16th century. There were 6 professions, alum mineral and water main (1957).

In the year 1555-1595 arised underground galleries, which are today too. Jirkov lost all the laws after the battle on the White mountain in 1620. The artisans from german countries were in Jirkov. The castle Červený Hrádek was demaged in the thirty years war. Then was reorganized the castle to the baroque style with chapel.

Jindřich František form Rottenhahn and George Buqouoy boosted development of the town, manufacture works arised and factories german industrialists. The post office arised in 1854, the bank in 1869. In 1911 was the town imbibe to the grid.

Families Kuhn and Tetzner were in Jirkov in 19th century. In this time came to connected with the other towns by the networks of roads and railroads. Sport centers, turistic and interested organizations arised. The fair brigade arised in 1874.

In the 20th century was Jirkov district agency for short time, there were 4 textile factories, 3 schools, 35 pubs and famous circus Kludsky (1920-1930). Jirkov was free 8 of May 1945 by the Red army.

New people came to the Jirkov and began built new housing development. After the second world war became to the Jirkov 3500 Czech, Moravians and the others people. In 1958 was established that Jirkov is third affected town (pollutant materials, smog). The situation wasn't better. In the eighty year's was situation in environment better. After November 1989 were changes in all spheres in the town. Unemployment, many factories were established.

Jirkov in a new millennium offer many cultural and interest actions. Jirkov is turistic centre. Jirkov befriend with Brand-Erbisdorg (Saxony) in 2002.
